2.2 The start

Also as far as the start is concerned we can orient ourselfs on experience with our car. Again and again we can read how a start in the cold adds to the wear of the motor. But there are procedures to minimize the damage. Surely it is not recommendable to demand high power from a cold motor. Many starts with short running times in which the motor gets not the operating tempeature are detrimental for the well-being of the motor. Typical are the short trips to and from the employment. For example condensation water in the oil is to be expected with a considerable damage potential. So we see how important an optimal start and warm-up phase is for an operation without problems. Our gas turbine reacts especially sensitive to the start phase. Therefore we will have a closer look to it.

The correct start of a gas turbine is of vital importance for it’s life, durability and reliability. Basically, the instructions and suggestions for the procedure, given by the manufacturer (OEM), should be adhered to. In the following, influences and effects will be explained to use the demands of the OEM more motivated and sure.

  • Time dependent, rotational speed - and temperature progression, during cold and warm starts.
  • Time interval between shut down and new start.
  • Measures after start break up, respectively, start repetition.

In cases of doubt, i.e., when the start instructions leave a certain margin for decision, the procedure should align itself on the maxims of the guiding principle:

Note:

Temperature increase possibly gradual.

(Use idle time to the fullest extreme, according to instructions.)

Run through quickly-undesired maked speed ranges.

(However, no unpermitted, quick accelerations!)

These suggestions have a technical background that will be briefly described below.
