4.2.2.2 Sealing compounds
Not too many contact surfaces are treated with sealing compound by the operator. Typical is the sealing of the flange of auxiliary units, filter casings, oil covers etc. The exclusive use of the gas turbine manufacturer’s permitted make is to be strictly observed. It is crucial to take care that the necessary amount of sealing compound is used, not after the motto “much helps much”, as the surplus of the sealant is pressed into the interior and could land, e.g., into the oil circulation ( "Ill. 3.5-3"). Such remnants are, according to experience, harmless in small quantities. Huge amounts that are brought in behind the filter can, e.g., block the oil nozzles of the bearings.
Sealing compound that is allowed for a particular place of usage can be unsuitable in another place where there is different material. This applies to the sealing effect ( perhaps problems through thermal expansion, to seal off medium, temperature etc.), as also to the influencing of the sealing surfaces, e.g., aiding corrosion , that is not removable during disassembly.
